Babylon

Strangers in Babylon

There is a video exhibition.
It is about escape and living abroad.

The project is called: Strangers in Babylon.

It is a video installation.
And an exhibition.

The project is about young refugees.
The young people fled alone.
From another country.
They now live in Bremerhaven.

What is it about in general?

The project shows the lives
of young people.
The young people are under 18.
They do not have their parents with them.
They have fled their home countries.

The project tells their stories.
And their feelings.

What is it about exactly?

The artists lived together
with the young people for one month.
They lived in a youth care facility.

The young people came from West Africa.
They talked about their daily life.
And about their thoughts.

Videos were made.
For example about everyday life.
And interviews with the young people.
Care workers were also interviewed.

Short films were also created together.
These films are fictional.
But they show real feelings.

The artists also filmed themselves.
And talked about themselves.
And their opinions.

The project shows:
Many young people want to be independent.
They want to work.
And take care of their own lives.

They want a good life.
That is why they fled.

The exhibition started in 2012.
The place was Bremerhaven.

The concept and the videos were by
Dominik Breuer
and Gunnar Seidel.

The project was created
in cooperation with
Initiative Jugendhilfe Bremerhaven.
