All That Out There

All That Out There is an art project.
It is an audio walk.

Audio walk means:
A listening walk.
People walk through the city.
They hear voices and sounds through headphones.

The project takes place in special places.
These places are called “non-places”.

Non-places means:
Places where people do not like to stay.
Places where people only stay for a short time.
For example a tunnel under a train station.

What is it about in general?

The project looks at German city centers.
It looks at places
where people only pass through quickly.

For example:
Passages.
Train stations.
Walk-through tunnels.

These places often feel cold.
Many people only walk through them.

The project asks questions:
What do these places say about us?
What do the things around us say?
What do they say about who we are?

What do we buy?
What do we use every day?
Are we maybe like the things around us?

What is it about exactly?

The project begins in Nuremberg.
The starting point is the Königstor Passage
at Nuremberg Central Station.

The project mixes different forms:
Performance.
Audio walk.
Spoken text and music.

At the beginning, all visitors get headphones.
They hear voices through the headphones.

The place itself becomes a stage.
People passing by become part of the piece.

The team looks closely at the non-places.
With curiosity.
With humor.
With criticism.

The term non-place comes from Marc Augé.
He was a researcher from France.

A non-place has:
no history.
no clear identity.

What does that mean?

People have a personality.
Places have an identity.
People give a place a name.
The place changes because of the name.
It gets an identity.
Places mean something to people.

The project also looks through time:
Into the past.
Into the present.
Into the future up to the year 2035.

This creates new questions:
Which things will surround us later?
Which things will we no longer need?
Which things will be normal?

The performance ends at Klarissenplatz.
There is an exhibition by UrbanLAB.
